Afrocats’ weekend Creative Expression session on our Youth of the World programme supported by Children in Need was in full swing recently - and started with a hearty lunch of egg-fried rice made by volunteer cook Shamim.
Cooking for twelve hungry young people is no easy feat, but Shamim said:
'The experience of cooking for marginalised young people on Afrocats’ weekend sessions is really nice, I love it so much - and the space is always nice and clean!'
Rice and vegetables are a great combination for the children as they contain both carbohydrates and fibre - carbohydrates are essential for energy, while fibre helps regulate blood sugar and control hunger.
One young person said:
'I really enjoyed the food, I'm not usually a fan of the vegetables but the rice was delicious!'
Afterwards, everyone danced their heart out with an uplifting dance session led by practitioner Lisa – including Afrocats’ team members Edel and Nessa.
The energetic and dynamic session not only helps everyone get into the habit of enjoying regular exercise, but also promotes bonding and community – all while having fun of course!
One participant said:
‘I thought the class was good, I enjoyed it a lot - and I'm definitely coming back!’
Our young participants had a blast, and Lisa’s experience leading the session was just as positive:
‘All the kids engaged in the class. It was a little bit tricky because of the difference in ages, but they all enjoyed the games and dance routine.
‘I'm happy they liked it, and I could see on their faces how much fun they were having.’
Thanks to the dedicated work by Shamim, Lisa, Edel, and Nessa on the session, it’s safe to say that everyone will be returning next week for another chance to get their dance on!
