Afrocats and Cook Stars were back in Manchester city centre recently for a wonderful session full of energy, good food, and plenty of hands-on learning.
We started with a few warm-up games, which got everyone chatting, laughing and ready to get stuck in - it was a really nice way to settle into the session before moving on to the cooking.
Meanwhile, creative facilitator Shaniè was hands on throughout to make sure those who weren't cooking kept their hands and minds busy to doodle to their hearts' content, and even make some Mothers' Day cards:
Back in the kitchen, the cooking group started by combining flour, butter, sugar, mixed spices, raisins and orange juice to make childhood favourite Paddington-inspired marmalade cake!
There was lots of careful measuring, mixing and teamwork as everyone worked through the recipe together with the help of the amazing Sarah from Cook Stars.
One of the key steps was learning how to make a well in the dry ingredients before adding the wet mixture in.
It’s a simple baking skill, but such a useful one, and everyone gave it a really good go.
Participants also made a warming custard using vanilla, milk, cream and nutmeg.
The smell in the room was amazing by this point, and everyone was excited to see (and taste!) the finished results.

And as the cake mixture was egg-free, you could even lick the spoon - though remember not to re-use it afterwards!
With it being World Book Day, it felt like the perfect session to celebrate stories in a different way, through sharing recipes, learning new skills and making something together.
And feedback from our young people included:
‘I enjoyed it because I could make stuff with my hands!’
‘I enjoyed the session because there was cooking and games, and the volunteers and Olivia and Shaniè because they both taught us how to play the games.’
‘I loved it omg! I enjoyed it because everyone was so nice: hashtag Olivia and also Shaniè!’
‘It was really fun to cook'
‘I’m happy because I learned new things.’
‘Everyone is so joyful giving us the best time of our lives!'
Learning to cook as a group can be a really special experience: following instructions, trying something new, and seeing what you can create with a few simple ingredients.
A huge well done to all of our Cook Stars for their focus, teamwork and effort throughout the session.
And an extra shoutout to those who were fasting and still fully took part - we see your commitment and we’re really proud of you.
Sessions like this are what Afrocats is all about: building confidence, learning practical skills, and enjoying time together in a warm and welcoming space :)
