Something special happens when young people seize an opportunity to make something with their hands.
And for our young people in North Manchester, creative activities like bookbinding and doodling can be so much more than arts and crafts.
They can be a gateway to building confidence, exploring their identity, slowing down, and discovering that their ideas matter.
With the support of our amazing artist Edel, they took simple materials and turned them into a handmade notebook, and everyone enjoyed a real sense of achievement to hold a completed book in their hands.
It wasn’t just decorating something ready-made and off-the-shelf - it was about creating a portable, personal space where their own thoughts, drawings and stories can live.
For many young people, especially those who may feel unsure in more formal learning spaces, making and doodling offers freedom; a pen, a page, and permission to experiment can open up confidence in surprising ways.
There’s no pressure to ‘get it right’ or be ‘perfect,’ and patterns, symbols, characters, shapes and colours can all become an invaluable part of self-expression.
For young people from the global majority, spaces like this really matter because they make room for voice, imagination and ownership.
And when young people are supported to create in ways that feel relaxed and culturally open, they can bring more of themselves into the room.
That might mean patterns inspired by home, colours that reflect a unique heritage, or stories that begin in their own lived experience.
When a young person binds their own book and fills it with doodles, ideas and dreams, they’re doing more than learning a skill: they’re building confidence, practising patience, expressing themselves, and discovering that what they create has value.
And sometimes, that first handmade book is just the start of something much bigger.

We know creativity is about more than making things - it’s about belonging.
