A little bit of drizzle but a whole lot of fun at Manchester Day 2026

The British summer rain might try to put a dampener on things - but come Manchester Day, you just can’t keep the Afrocats and kittens down!
Alongside partners Walk the Plank and Eye of Newt Theatre Arts, and gratefully supported as always by longtime funder BBC Children in Need, our inspiring young people and parents were out in force with the Afrocats team to join forces with organisations from all over the region to celebrate our amazing city.
All eyes were on our young Christina Rosetti-inspired windsweepers as they looped from the starting point at St Peter’s Square down Deansgate towards Exchange Square, then headed down Cross Street and John Dalton Street, and back down Deansgate.

The annual event changed for the first time to a Sunday instead of Saturday, and there was a real Catalan flavour to the day as performers from Barcelona headed to Manchester to join in the city-centre-wide festivities.
Our young people said of the event:
‘It was the best day of my life.’
‘Ten out of ten! I enjoyed all of it.’
‘I enjoyed seeing my friends, and being a part of it.’
‘I enjoyed everything, seeing new people all around the city centre.’
And volunteer Sophia shared:
‘Everyone who helped us out was amazing – it was all really well done, and it was amazing seeing everyone’s smiles.’
Thanks to all who came along and championed us at the parade – everyone finished up for the summer on such a high, and our work at Afrocats wouldn't be what it is without you.
