We are thrilled to announce that Afrocats has been awarded ‘Champions of Equality and Social Justice’ at the Manchester Culture Awards 2025: a powerful recognition of our mission to uplift communities, celebrate Manchester’s global identities, and create spaces where everyone belongs.
This year’s ceremony, opened by the Lord Mayor and an excellent performance by the Manchester Youth Steelpan Orchestra, was energised by the legendary DJ Paulette and spoken-word artist Reece Williams, and shone a light on nearly 50 exceptional finalists, selected from over 400 nominations across the city’s cultural sector.
'To stand among such visionary creators, organisers, and cultural leaders as a nominee was already an honour; and to take home this award is truly humbling for our grassroots organisation'
The night echoed the spirit of ‘Always, Everywhere: Manchester’s Cultural Ambition 2024–2034,’ a plan that champions culture as a shared resource woven into every neighbourhood - an ethos which mirrors our work at Afrocats as we embed creativity into everyday life, amplifying unheard voices, and nurturing the next generation of artists, leaders, and changemakers across the city.
And as our beloved city is preparing to host both the BRIT and the MOBO Awards, and as we mark the 80th anniversary of the Pan-African Congress, we’re reminded of the milestones and legacies that shape us.
A city influenced by empire and colonialism, yet defined by its resistance, activism, and vibrant storytelling traditions, these stories - our stories - continue to guide the work we do.
Cllr Garry Bridges also spoke of the growing sense of collaboration across the cultural sector, and we feel that momentum deeply. Our recognition at this year’s awards is not just a celebration of Afrocats, it’s a testament to the partnerships, families, young people, artists, and community leaders who trust us with their stories, lived experiences, and their dreams.
Together, we are building trust, strengthening cohesion, and carving out a cultural legacy rooted in real equity and a thriving imagination.
To stand among such visionary creators, organisers, and cultural leaders as a nominee was already an honour; and to take home this award is truly humbling for our grassroots organisation.
This award fuels our commitment to ensuring that Afrocats remains a home for creativity, empowerment, and cultural pride.
But our work is far from finished.
Join us. Support us. Stand with us.
Whether you can donate, volunteer, attend an event, or simply share our mission with someone new, your involvement helps us create a more just, joyful, and culturally rich Manchester for all.
Be part of the journey - get involved with Afrocats today.
